Old love number 1: EVITA
I frequent London during my student and working days mostly due to my love and passion for musicals. It didn’t matter that I was running low on my allowance, I’d take the GBP 1 coach to London and bear the hard seats and tumbling ride. I’d buy the cheapest theatre ticket and squinted throughout the experience. It didn’t matter. Les Miserables, my ultimate favourite. I must have watched it more than 5 times. I never saw Evita in West End but I watched the movie more times even my obese cat seemed to run away at the sound of it being played (again!).
So when Caryn came and surprised me in the oncall room (she played the violin for my birthday!) we shared stories, likes and hobbies. I found my Evita – bosom buddy! She made me a copy of the soundtrack last Friday and I have been listening to it almost non-stop. Speaking of obsession eh? I adore all of Webber’s pieces but Evita to me, is the most special. Among my top choices are the non other Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, I’d be Surprisingly Good For You, Another Suitcase in Another Hall and You Must Love Me. Superb!
New love number 1: Yasmin Mogahed
There are people out there who can reach you so effortlessly. I love her, I love her words, I love her way of motivating and reminding us and I love her for the sake of Allah. Because through her, I am reminded of His Grace and His Mercy. They say, befriend the wise, the learned and those who keep you on the right path as they are the best companions you should have. And I am just impressed at how different my twitter page became. As soon as I follow her, my second new love, Tariq Ramadan, my old love number 2 – it gave me a different nudge in the ribs. True, with the remembrance of Allah that the heart finds peace.
Old love number 2: Suhaib Webb
Check out his programme on Muhammad the Idol. You will understand why. No elaborate reasoning or justification required.
New love number 2: Sheikh Yahya Ibrahim
What can I say? It was love at first sight. He took the opening session at the Twins of Faith last December. Masha Allah. I had goosebumps. I was literally shivering in my seat. I looked at Arianne next to me and I knew she felt the same way. The next day, we both came in maxi skirts instead of trousers. Baby steps as Sheikh said, insya Allah. His Signs are all around us, I regret that sometimes I look at the wrong direction or been blinded from the glaring truth.
